After introducing a track at a recent One Direction show, stating (according to JustJared), “This is my favorite song off the last album, and it is about trying to find that number one woman of your life… which none of you can relate to, because most of you are girls. Except for the boys in here, you know what I’m talking about,” 1D’s Liam Payne has been bombarded on social media with claims that he is homophobic… But what do you think?
To be fair, he has a point… And it is probably safe to say a hefty chunk of a One Direction concert’s screaming fan base are heterosexual. Or at least for Harry Styles that week. A passing comment can be misconstrued so quickly these days, especially when Twitter trolls are concerned. And while his comments were met with a strong backlash of claims (and abuse) – Liam Payne’s failure to mention the LGBT fans among the crowd was probably not intentional.
Liam quickly took to Twitter to crush the claims, apologising to those he offended and adding: “I am in no way shape or form homophobic that’s a [ridiculous] thing to say and I’m not here to offend people so take it as you will…
“It was meant in general.”
Despite all the hoo-har, the One Direction fans stood by Liam, with #WeLoveYouLiam slowly rising up the trending topics on Twitter. Want to join in the debate online? Follow Liam Payne on @Real_Liam_Payne and One Direction too. But if that’s not your bag really, follow us instead.
