Review // James ‘To My Surprise’

James - Girl At The End Of The World
‘Girl At The End Of The World’ Released 18/03/16

When I caught James a few years back at the 02 Academy in Bournemouth my expectations were most definitely exceeded. They are quite simply a band you just have to see live, as there is nothing quite like the atmosphere at a James show, especially when the all-time favourites creep into the set list and make everyone go a little nuts. Whether they’re carrying on their creativity in the background or releasing new music (as we await the release of ‘Girl At The End Of The World’ on the 18th March 2016) it is obvious that James continue to remain one of the UK’s most loved acts.

So, what happens when they tease fans with the audio video for ‘To My Surprise’ from their upcoming album? Well, the fan reviews are a little mixed, and while its not quite as addictive as ‘Laid’ ‘She’s A Star’ or ‘Sit Down’ they have definitely created something you’ll very quickly warm to. So whack it on in the car, play it loudly on your way to work or sing along on the tube, because you’ll very quickly remember why you love James so much.

The band’s Tim Booth says of the release:

Bands talk about that difficult second album but it’s the trickster 14th one that’s the real MOTHERF****R,” says Tim Booth of the making of the new record. “As always with James it’s a collaborative process allowing ample room for improvisation, intuition, skill and dumb luck. From the outside our process looks like chaos but chaos is our friend and we have a history that gives us confidence that something magical will eventually appear. Most of my best lyrics are unconscious typos so don¹t ask me what it’s about; your projection is as good as mine. This was perhaps the most difficult and stressful album we have ever made. I hope you find it as rewarding as we do. OYSTER-GRIT-PEARL.

Jim Glennie adds, “The essence of JAMES is live. The pleasure never diminishes. I can’t wait for us to get our hands on these songs in front of the best audience a band can have.

I’d highly recommend you catch James for yourself on their May 2016 tour:
